Ripoi Primary School

The story of a community hungry for education for their children.

Parents choosing literacy for their children. A community working together towards a big dream.

In mid 2015, on the way back from a visit to Maasai Mara, we noticed a group of children gathered.

They were learning how to read, under a tree.

Teacher Kool, a Maasai woman who doesn't shy away from a challenge, set up a little school, under the main tree, where she was teaching kids how to read, write, speak Swahili and English. There were about 60 children there, hungry for all the information and focused on the small blackboard hanging from the tree.

Stopping that day on our way back to Nairobi was one of the best things we have ever done. Little by little we raised money to provide basic items like notebooks and pens, charts, books and crayons, always making a stop there on our way to any trips. And every time we stopped, the number of children increased!

Since then, we have built 5 fully functional classrooms with the help of volunteers, donors, travellers and the local community. The initial group of 60 students has grown to 280 children!! The quality of their education keeps increasing as they now have fully qualified teachers too.

Why do we need your help? In about a month, we are doing an intake and have around 100 children waiting to be enrolled, but we don’t have enough classrooms.

While this is changing all the time, the Maasai tribe have continued to live in a very traditional manner and education is only becoming a priority in the later years. The community at Ripoi are fully engaged on the running of the school and supportive of its expansion and development. Ourselves and the community work side by side with one goal in mind - to afford the opportunity of education to all the children in the area.

We need to raise $20,000 to build 2 additional classrooms, 1 kitchen, and to be able to furnish them! This will mean we can take on another 100 children at the school.

Amazing right?
