A sustainability dream come true for Marafiki

A few years ago, we realised that the only way to be really sustainable was to set up our own social enterprises. This would ensure that we would have more income to support our work and create more employment.

Voluntours Adventures is our first social enterprise, a safari travel agency dedicated to great adventures in East Africa and an amazing contributor to all our work in Maasai Mara to date. If it hadn’t been for our travel agency, we wouldn’t have found the 40 kids learning under the tree at Ripoi. In fact the very first classroom we ever built there, was fully funded by Voluntours - what a dream come true!

At the beginning of 2017 we took a huge risk and started another social enterprise, needing a lot more investment and time, but one that we knew would have an immediate positive impact.

This is how Anyoraa Camp in Maasai Mara was born, also referred to as “Our HQ in Mara”. Anyoraa is the Maasai word for “Believe” - because we believe that tourism should and can be a positive impact in the world of development and we are out to prove it. Not just that!

  • We believe communities have the right to welcome tourists in their own terms

  • We believe tourism should only be a reality if the community’s basic needs are met - like water, healthcare and the ability to choose their own paths.

  • We believe in the richness of the Maasai culture and in their ability to improve it and change it as they decide as a community.

We have not opened the camp yet to the public, however, we have already hit our social goals as follows:

  • We found clean water and piped it to a water tower for the population to benefit from. 10,000 people now have access to clean water and the repercussions of that are amazing.

  • We have planted over 200 trees which are thriving!

  • We have built 4 cabins with plastic bottles… yep, you heard right. As a result we have cleaned the area of single use plastic bottles and given them a second life for many to enjoy.

We’ll keep you posted on the progress of the camp and certainly, the opening of it!
